A St Albans family home, layered from the ground up. Personality, materiality, and a quiet nod to the Arts and Crafts tradition the house was built into.

The Brief
Our clients came to us with a house they loved, and rooms that weren't quite doing what they needed them to.
The bones of the property were beautiful — Arts and Crafts detailing they wanted to honour rather than hide. But the interiors themselves felt disconnected. Furniture bought in stages over years. Spaces that hadn't quite settled into how the family actually used them. A house that looked lovely in photographs and felt like a work-in-progress in person.
They asked us to bring it together. Not to strip it back, and not to over-design it. Just to make the whole thing feel like it belonged to them.
how we did it
The design started with fabrics.
Rather than beginning with a floor plan or a colour scheme, we built the interiors up from a set of material choices — the fabrics that would live longest in the family's daily experience of the house. Everything layered on from there. Furniture designed around the fabrics. Joinery designed to hold and frame them. Materials chosen to sit calmly alongside the Arts and Crafts detailing already in the fabric of the building.
It's a slower way to design a house. It's also how you end up with rooms that feel considered rather than assembled.
the result
Bespoke joinery throughout the house does two jobs at once. It gives the family the storage a busy home needs, and it draws a quiet line of continuity through spaces that would otherwise feel separate. Custom furniture pieces, designed specifically for this house, hold the layered textiles and finishes at their centre.
The finished home reads as one considered whole, rather than several rooms decorated in the same style. It reflects a family with real personality — a house with quiet confidence, layered warmth, and a foundation of craft that runs through every space.
